UX for HealthTech & MedTech

HealthTech and MedTech products sit at the intersection of technology, clinical practice and user experience. Product teams understand the technology. Designers understand user experience. Healthcare professionals understand clinical practice. Patients bring their own needs, expectations and lived experiences.

The challenge is connecting these perspectives in a way that supports usability, adoption and effective product use.

My role? To bridge the gap. I bring clinical and healthcare insight to product design, content and user experience decisions. This helps ensure that interfaces, workflows and user-facing content align with the realities of clinical practice and the needs of the people who use them in the real-world.

Understanding Healthcare Users

Effective healthcare experiences begin with understanding the people who use them.

Whether the product is designed for healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, trainers or support teams, each user group interacts with technology differently and brings distinct goals, expectations and constraints.

A workflow that feels intuitive to a product team may not reflect clinical reality. Terminology that is appropriate for a specialist may be confusing for patients. Educational content that appears clear to subject matter experts may create friction for first-time users.

Understanding these differences helps ensure that products, interfaces and content are aligned with the needs of the people they are designed to serve.

Understanding Clinical Context and Workflows

Medical technologies are integrated into clinical environments, care pathways and decision-making processes that shape how users interact with a product.

Medical software, digital health applications, remote patient monitoring platforms and connected medical devices all support specific clinical objectives and user workflows.

Understanding these environments helps identify potential gaps between product design and real-world use.

It also helps ensure that UIs, content and interactions support the way healthcare professionals and patients actually work, communicate and make decisions.

UX Writing for MedTech & HealthTech User Interfaces (UIs)

Effective UX writing requires more than clear language. It requires understanding how different healthcare users interpret, process and act on information.

A surgeon expects terminology that reflects clinical practice. A nurse needs information that can be understood and applied quickly within a workflow. Patients often require simpler, more accessible language.

Caregivers may need explanations that are both clear and reassuring.

UX writing helps adapt content to the clinical knowledge, expectations and real-world context of different end users, ensuring that information is understood and usable by the people it is intended for.

UX Research and Expert Feedback

Medical software, healthcare apps, and other digital health solutions benefit from feedback long before they reach end users.

UX research, interface reviews, workflow reviews and content evaluations can help identify potential usability, communication and adoption issues early in the development process.

This perspective combines healthcare knowledge, clinical context and user experience considerations to evaluate whether interfaces, workflows and content support the needs of end users – whether healthcare professionals or patients.

The goal is not simply to assess design quality, but to help ensure that products make sense within the healthcare environments in which they will ultimately be used.
